The Crying Mountain (2024-ongoing)Multi-channel film installationVariable duration (loop), Super 8 4:3 colour, earth, candles, and seed paper. The Crying Mountain is a sound and video installation that calls for the audience’s participation by engaging in a collective ritual of memory and mourning. The installation consists of six reels of Super 8 film and recordings of matching poems. It depicts the mythical evocation of a fictional woman saint, gestures addressing the liminal space between life and death, subjugated landscapes, but also practices of mending the earth, offering a poetic visual metaphor for loss. The ritualistic gesture accompanying the installation invites the audience to write a note to a deceased loved one on a seed-embedded piece of paper and bury it in a pile of soil in the gallery space. I bind myself with the audience through a social contract as the installation operates as a constant exchange. Pinned on the wall is a handwritten letter to participants where I promise to replant the notes they have entrusted me with in nature so they can bloom. Transforming the gallery into a provisional space of communion for strangers, this installation offers a moment of mental rest, for one’s pain to be acknowledged and shared, and a suspended moment of introspection when we can take the time to think about and speak to our dead.

Stabbing the River (2019-2025)Film and installationDuration 2’24 minutes, Super 8 colour 4:3, medium format polaroids, negative, drawings, broken glass
A quest with an irrational end: stabbing a river. An oneiric gesture towards the landscape captured by the river Seyhan, in Adana. Here, the act of stabbing repeated towards the exhaustion of the subject (the river, or the stabber?), is declinated through an assemblage layering the traces of those strokes. Medium format polaroids merge with film negatives enlarged to the point they become some abstract landscapes resembling the surface of the wounded river, and drawings with instructions on how to stab a river to death: “Hold the water firmly with your left hand”, “hit the surface of the water [with the knife]”, “repeat the gesture until the water stops moving”. The whole body is engaged in a very physical gesture, the repeated stabbing of a constantly renewed flow, a romantic duel with Nature towards a vain exploit.

This work was produced in collaboration with Pearlie Frisch during the residency Every Me curated by Mustafa Boğa, in Adana.

Poem-film for everything we’ve lost (2023)Film installation &#38;amp; performanceDuration 2’21 minutes (loop), Super 8 colour 4:3, silent

Poem-film for everything we’ve lost stages a wake in the form of a visual lament through a silent Super 8 film playing in a loop. Participants are invited to enter a room filled with candles and lilies and take a moment to rest and meditate on all the people or things they have lost as I read a poem. Pamphlets are distributed to the participants so they can read the poem with me, in the manner of a funeral service, in a suspended, dreamlike atmosphere of intimacy and contemplation.
Understanding loss beyond the individual experience, this work also calls for the mourning of intangible things such as the movement of time, the ‘death’ of the season, a past self, an abandoned project, or an idea we do not believe in anymore, towards the possibility of a collective experience of mourning. The film’s images consist of enigmatic, visual metaphors for life and death, not so much for the sake of creating representations of loss, but to offer an embodiment of grief, a container, through this multimedia approach, where participants can take a moment for themselves, a time for recollection and inner experience. I thus hope to create a quiet space for introspection and mental rest, but also disquiet and unease.</description>

In a faraway land, a wandering poetess announces the death of a horse. Two sisters living secluded in the desert then prepare a mourning ritual. Following a mysterious long long-lost tradition, they work on creating a “jar of sorrows”: they walk in the desert to harvest clay and make a vessel to collect and encapsulate their tears, which they seal and bury to honor the deceased horse. Wake for a Horse&#38;nbsp;follows the evolution of their sisterhood through their journey of loss.
This film was produced by Samantha Steele. It premiered as part of Microwave International New Media Arts Festival 2023 (Hong Kong), and won the award for Best Experimental / Poetic Film at Carmarthen Bay Film Festival 2024 (Wales).

Does Spring Hide Its Joy&#38;nbsp;(2022)Film&#38;nbsp;Duration 10 minutes, Super 8 colour 4:3, original soundtrack by Kali Malone featuring Stephen O’Malley and Lucy Railton
Does Spring Hide Its Joy is an immersive audio experience by American composer Kali Malone featuring musicians Stephen O'Malley and Lucy Railton. Manifesting as a 4-day multichannel sound installation, Malone offers a deep listening environment in a hydraulic tower and engine house in Birkenhead Docks. Does Spring Hide Its Joy was created and recorded in the empty Berlin Funkhaus &#38;amp; Monom during the lockdown of spring 2020. The music is a study in long-form, non-linear durational composition, with a heightened focus on septimal just intonation and beating interference patterns.Originally designed by engineer Jesse Hartley in 1868, the Central Hydraulic Tower and Engine House is based on the Palazzo Vecchio, a Renaissance cavern in Florence, Italy. Bombed during World War II, the iconic nineteenth-century Grade II listed building has been left unused for decades. In this empty chamber of industrial energy, Malone's durational composition breathes and bellows through porous brick walls, reverberating toward the surface of dockland waters.
I directed a film accompanying the piece, filming the ruins of the hydraulic tower and engine house in Birkenhead Docks in a trembling portrait of this industrial place where nature has quietly reclaimed its rights. I tried to introduce a human presence in this desolate space through the camera's feverish movements and wandering, endeavoring not to just film the building as a monumental empty skeleton but to film together with the building and its collapsed roof, its holes, the moss and debris scattered on the floor, bits of burnt wood, but also all the living creatures who made this ruin their kingdom.This film was commissioned by Abandon Normal Devices and funded by Arts Council England. It was selected in International Competition at Videoex Festival 2024 (Zurich) in the New Kind of Poetry section. Assistant director: Sweatmother.&#38;nbsp;

The Night Won’t Seem to End (2021-ongoing)Video installation
Variable duration, colour 9:16 HD, sound
This series of silent video portraits deals with storytelling, oral memory, and intimacy. It repeats the same filming protocol: a person recorded themselves recollecting a personal story, then I filmed a second person, in one take, listening for the first time this memory I was entrusted with; after that, I asked the second person I had just filmed to tell in their turn something about them that would be recorded, and so on.The Night Won’t Seem to End acts as a sort of fire camp — where one finds a confidant, whether in an old friend or a stranger, during a long night of deep conversations — with remote participants, enabling new paths towards intimacy. Doing so, I wish to create a subjective and ever-incomplete yet growing “encyclopedia” not of knowledge but of feelings.

The Things that Change (2021)VideoDuration 13 minutes, digital HD colour 16:9, original soundtrack by Frederikke Hoffmeier (Puce Mary), with Stephanie Sant (performer)
Ghosts, psychedelism, and drifting. A phantasmagoric video capturing a mysterious ritual washing by night. As the splashing gesture is repeated, the water turns darker and darker. Through hypnotic movements, the body and self slowly fade into the night until it becomes invisible.

And the River walked with us (2017)Film&#38;nbsp;Duration 3'09 min, Super 8 colour 4:3 and phone footage, original soundtrack by Sébastien Pont
A collaboration between Anne Vimeux and Célia Hay
The film is about a pilgrimage that took place along the River Thames. As part of this journey, Anne Vimeux and I walked from the Thames’ spring to its mouth. We captured thus the isolation of living in autarky, the gestures of our everyday routine, as well as some rituals. A certain sense of loss emerges from this strange pilgrimage. As and when the walk progresses, some odd silhouettes and events occur. The physical and mental effort of the walk leads to a dissolution of the bodies, which appear then as some kind of ghosts. Eventually, as our journey ends by the sea, we reach a certain state of sweet madness.

This film was commissioned by Channel 4 Random Acts, the&#38;nbsp;Institute of Contemporary Arts London, and Dazed &#38;amp; Confused Magazine. It premiered at the BAFTA qualifying festival London Short Film Festival 2018, and was part of the Playback touring exhibition across various art centers (Tyneside Cinema, HOME Manchester, MAC Birmingham, etc) and film festivals (Sheffield Doc Fest, Encounters Film Festival) in England in association with Random Acts.
